Latin sharpens linguistic intelligence and gives direct access to the roots of the Romance languages and of learned vocabulary. Latin is the finest training for the mind ever devised. It teaches one to think with precision, economy, and elegance.
Latin is the mother tongue of the Romance languages: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and French. Words directly from Latin are an essential part of the vocabulary of medicine, law et ceteri. Words derived from Latin dominate academia and other professions. Developing a command of Latin trains students in linguistics, giving them the power to decipher other languages quickly. The study of Latin can help build a bridge between the rote learning of verbs and nouns, and a deeper understanding of the unconscious assumptions that underlie language and culture.
